About Agency

Helander and Leiviskä have shared an office since 1978. While collaborating on many projects, most of their work is separate, Vilhelm Helander focusing on restoration and teaching, Juha Leiviskä acquiring many commissions through architectural competitions. Kipparintalo was designed by Juha Leiviskä and Kati Murtola, who has worked in the office since 2005.

The basic essence and function of architecture have remained unchanged throughout the ages. According to Leiviskä, architecture should always improve what existed before. Architects should aspire to create an aesthetically high-quality environment for the ordinary person, providing an uplifting spatial experience. Its human dimension grows gradually from the environment, always based on human scale. The building acquires its identity in interaction with its surroundings, life and light.
