Prior to founding my own practice in 1993, I worked for a number of other architectural offices and was a partner in Häkli & Karhunen Architects from 1989 to 1993. In the 2000s, I have specialized in wood architecture – designing it, teaching it and speaking out on its behalf. Most of my projects are public service buildings, such as schools and day-care centres as well as major renovations. Various small-scale, multipurpose buildings have offered me the opportunity to explore wood as a building material and to develop a special wood-inspired vocabulary of form, structure and detail.
I strive to maximize the ecological advantages of using wood, and to use wood in a way that accentuates its natural texture, structure and unique characteristics. Wood is an ideal material for creating modern, timeless architecture, drawing on Finland’s long legacy of wood-building experience. My aim is to create expressive yet simplified architecture that is well-thought-out in all its facets, combining Finnish craftsmanship with prefab technology, new industrial engineering solutions and a polished level of detailing to match the building method.
We always delve deeply into the specifics of each project, carefully considering the demands of the site, the user’s needs and the building method, whether we are designing a major public building or a simple maintenance structure. Although we strive for a consistently rational approach in both structure and execution, and although there is a certain continuity in the details of all our projects, each of our buildings has its own special warm atmosphere that can be intuited on an emotional level.
